Not Really Free Sunglasses

free sunglassesSo, I just saw an ad in my Men’s Health Magazine about a “market study” where you can get $200 sunglasses for “free.” You just pay the S&H, which is overpriced, so they do not actually end up being free.

Each pair costs $9-$20 so I said, “What the heck?” I ordered a pair for $19 with an interchangeable amber driving lens and a sunglass case for $6. We’ll see how the quality is when they get here and I will update this post with my review of Red Star World Wear and Vectra Vision.

They are the same company, but Red Star World Wear says they will refund you immediately if you do not like their product. If they suck and give me a problem with the return, then I will be sure to blast them for it.

Get a “Free” Watch

Well, the watch is not really free because they charge you the S&H on this one too. If you order 4 pairs of “free” sunglasses then you can get the “free” watch for $10. I’m sure that it’s only worth about $10 and not the $200 that they claim it is worth.

A Good Deal?

We will see how this one turns out, but I think $10-$20 for a pair of “free” sunglasses is a good deal. $6 for a decent case is a good deal. $10 for a cheap watch is a good deal too. I’m not expecting Oakley quality, so it should work out OK.

Just to rant, I think paying 100’s of dollars for expensive shades is ridiculous and you will probably lose the damn things anyways. You can look just as good for $10 without a wearing a fancy logo on your face.

I got several free pairs of sunglasses from them and a 500 dollar gift card I haven’t used yet. I will say that they are much better quality than I thought they would be. They fit well and are stylish. Better than my usual 7-11 pair haha. I know they are having issues with shipping but I heard it was because sooo many people ordered the free pair they were a bit overwhelmed. Anyway I could say that the quality is exactly what you pay for. For $120 pair, I got a $120 pair. I could spend 500 on a more popular brand but these are just fine!

  • I saw the offer for the free glasses in my husbands Sports I’ll. Swimsuit edition. I decided to look at the site. The glasses look pretty good, but I have found you can’t go on looks alone you have to try these things on to see how they fit. The add says free, but you have to pay shipping and handling and it’s over priced. In my opinion a person is better off to go to a Oakley dealer and get them a good pair of sunglasses and be done with it. My stepdad put my pallets on one day while we were fishing, because I would say look at that fish in the water and he couldn’t see it, I told him it was my glasses and he didn’t believe me. I said; put them on and see for yourself, he is now the proud owner of a new pair of polorized Oakley’s. They do make a difference. He said; no wonder you catch more fish than me.

i got the 500$ promo card at a marathon. ordered several pair, got the free watch too. the watch was barely worth the “S&H” i paid for it. the sunglasses on the otherhand were great! i initially got 5 pair on the promo card. didn’t like two pair so sent them back in exchange for a different one which i’m pleased with. had no issues with customer service and would buy more of their glasses. i realize they aren’t free, but for less than 20$ a pair they look pretty damn good and are polarized.

You have to realize that these glasses are or should be very lightweight…even if you order ten pair, it shouldn’t cost that much to ship. Think about it!

I just got the free $500 gift card after ordering a book off I saw on THE DOCTORS. It says on the website that everything is free, I just have to pay about eighty dollars for shipping and handling. I just wanted to know if this was really a good deal or not. It is supposed to be a $460, just curious is all, can anyone help??

The glasses “RETAIL” for $100+ according to the site, realistically about $10-$40. They are obviously not Oakley or Rayban quality. This originally started as market research a? few years back and has continued under many different names, recently Redstar. They do offer AWESOME styles. So grab a Playboy or Sports Illustrated to get the promo code, and take a look. I lose pricey high quality sunglasses all the time but somehow I hold on to cheap ones, so I love these deals. I have a 3 yr old pair!

I too found the ad in a copy of SI:SE. I have ordered from ads like this in the past and found the quality of the product to be severely lacking. I liked the way several of these pairs looked, so I took a shot. Granted, I went in with the realization that the “$100-200″ price tag on some of these was severely inflated, but I do not think I got cheated. For what I actually paid per pair, (around $12-15) I think the offer was a very good deal. My only complaint is that they feel very fragile. Granted, I have not yet broken a pair, and I am pretty hard on things. I would hope that if they put these out with a price tag as high as the retail value listed, they would make them so they feel a bit sturdier. I also received a watch with my order. I am actually very happy with it so far. Bottom line is, don’t go in expecting to receive something for nothing. If you are expecting a $200 pair of sunglasses for the $9.99 + s&h they are offering, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a decent product at a fair price, this offer would very much be worth your while.

I got a $500.00 promotin card back in fall 2010 the glasses (4) are great, unfortunatly I cant say the same about the watch. The watches second hand would stick, so I sent it back for a free repair or replacement. When I got the watch back the second hand no longer sticks but now the digital funcktions do not work. Not worth the s&h charges to send back.

I LOVE my Red Star’s. I got a gift card at the Running of the Green on St. Patrick’s Day. I agree with many others, they are not worth $200 but NO sunglasses are worth $200. I paid $32 for 3 pairs and they are better then any other brands I’ve tried. They are great for my runs and the cycling pair has vents so they don’t steam when I ride. Awesome product for a good price!

This is a scam! Payed $56 for shipping on four pairs of glasses , that quality wise are not worth $15 combined. I bought some iron man glasses for my son from target for $5 that are of much better construction than these 4 pairs of “red star ” glasses. I don’t think this is a market study at all. I think they have built a web page with glasses that look pretty cool in the pictures, getting u to buy them and thinking u are getting a deal. But what u end up with is a pile of plastic not worth putting on your face. As that old saying goes if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. So if u want to waste your hard erned money and time go ahead and be disappointed. But I am trying to let people know that is exactly what u will be once u receive your order ,after spending 4 times the amount on shipping than what the glasses are realy worth.

SCAM! DO NOT ORDER! My husband had a “gift card” in his finishers bag after his race. He was told they are trying to market to athletes so this was a great deal. He ordered 2 watches and 4 pairs of sunglasses. Shipping and handling was outrageous! We could not believe the CRAP that came in the mail! We should have went to the dollar store. The watches were made of shiney plastic and the sunglasses were so cheap! The best part is a couple months later another box comes in the mail. My husband knew right away it was a scam! He called our credit card company and blocked the company from making charges then called Red STar, who claimed we never “unchecked” the continuity clause that said they were going to keep sending us merchandise and billing us! We ordered over the phone, where was the clause? My husband informed them of a little company a few years back called “Columbia Records” were they kept sending cd’s and billing you even though you weren’t ordering anything. Yep, The Supreme Court ruled it a scam and put them out of business. Red Star better watch yourself!

If you do order through this website, be sure to un-check the box on the ordering page or they’ll send you samples automatically and charge your card. I saw a bad review about that, but tried it anyway. A $10 watch is a good thing — if it works. Here’s hoping.

Polarized lenses are just as good as my Smith or Oakley lenses, and that’s what matters to me.

I think it’s almost a shame that they have to make their money off of inflated shipping costs. On the other hand, the “market research” must haved showed that we consumers are afraid of $15 glasses, and this business model is what would work to get us to buy the glasses.

It worked, and I’m really happy with my RedStars.

I ordered 4 pair of these for my husband and myself. I knew the s/h was inflated because that is closer to the actual cost of these glasses. 3 of them are backordered and we received 1 pair. The polarized lens works fine but the frames are exactly what you should expect for $15-$20 sunglasses—-cheap! They are no better than drugstore quality. I’m not disappointed as I figured that going into it. You get what you pay for. I did read a review on the internet that said a guy kept getting a couple pairs auto shipped to him every two months and billing his cc. Anyone else have that happen? That would make me furious!

All of you guys claiming people are stupid for not listening to you need to get off your high horse. I don’t think anyone is expecting to get Oakley quality glasses from these guys. But if I can get 7 pairs of sunglasses for $120 instead of the normal one pair for $120 that I lose after 3 months, it is still a good deal. Especially if they really are polarized. All it is a gimmick. Did anyone else notice the creative pricing? All the ones that look the best cost like 1 cent but are valued as the most expensive. So to the not so careful consumer you buy 10 pairs of the 1 cent ones but pay the 9% fee on 10x the inflated cost.
If it’s too good to be true it probably is, but 7 pairs for $120 including 2nd day shipping, I’m not going to complain. Besides I can simply exchange them if they are that bad. All you righteous fools need to calm down. You are the morons for actually believing other people thought this was some amazing deal.

Alright, here it is. I have seen this ad (Maxim) and right away figured I was going pay $9-19.99 s/h on a pair of sunglasses that were worth… $9-19.99! I am unable to wear “cheap” sunglasses because they aren’t constructed properly, they don’t fit correctly, and their “polarized” lenses are not so much and end up giving me headache. I went through 3 or 4 pair of *Smith* sunglasses, which fit me perfectly, but I lost one pair in the Pacific Ocean, one pair in a bar in Hawaii, another pair in a bar in Australia, and have no clue to why I bought the last pair, as they weren’t remotely my style. I then bought a pair of *Maui Jim’s* and those were the best pair of sunglasses I have ever owned. I had them for about 5 years when I broke the lenses, I called them up and sent them in to be fixed, they didn’t carry my style anymore so they upgraded me, free of cost. I had them for another 3 years before my wife left them at a music festival. Oh well.
The point is, there is a huge difference between quality sunglasses and cheap sunglasses. Unfortunately, most of the time you have to pay for quality. Nothing great is cheap and nothing cheap is great.
I guess my biggest thing is, are these “polarized” sunglasses really polarized? Go out and look at your car’s window tint, if its wavy then yes, if its just darker, then no. Let me know.

Hi, I got a $500 gift card from a magazine too. The first thought come to my mind is that, these are cheap $5 sunglasses that can be found on the street in US. Even more, as a Chinese I know how much it cost for them to manufacture: 5c, yes only 5 cents, that’s the wholesale price they got from manufacturers. So imagine the profit margin.

Yes of course there’s advertising, transportation, tax and whatever add to it. But still, a lucrative business.

Wow! Some of you people amaze me. This isn’t a scam, its just how they’re selling them. Do you honestly think they are $300 sunglasses? Of course not! Do you really think the “shipping & handling” cost is the actual shipping & handling? Of course not! They are selling the sunglasses for the cost of the s&h, nothing more. If you honestly believe these are actually $200 sunglasses, then you’re an idiot!

Do you see the kiosks in the mall that sell “designer” sunglasses for $10? These are the same things, just selling them a different way.

Oh, and you don’t have to buy $500 worth of sunglasses, just pick up one or two pairs and get out for about $20. And don’t buy the stupid watch!

These are the same quality as what you buy in the mall for $10. Nothing more.

Yea, they are stylish, and the polarized ones are pretty clear, but they are not what they CLAIM to be. I understand they are trying to get their name out there, but they will never be oakley or rayban material.
For what I paid for “shipping and handling”, I ordered on the 23rd of june and received them july 5th. With the weight and the packaging they came in, I would think it could have been upgraded to express, but whatever. I got my moneys worth. Never again!

  • I signed up here just to shed some light on the RedStar WorldWear gift card scam because I feel it is my duty, as an American, to expose these con-artists for the crooks they are. Let me explain the process of this 3 ring circus.

    THE SALE IS A HOAX:
RedStar WorldWear buys $2 sunglasses in bulk from China, brands them with a red communist star and tries to sell them for $138, claiming they are “on sale” from $230. There is no evidence of anyone ever purchasing a pair of RedStar sunglasses for $230.

THE GIFT CARD IS A HOAX.
Nobody buys the glasses because people aren’t that stupid- but Americans can’t resist free stuff so RedStar sends out $500 gift cards. The catch is a 9% service fee. (which we all know is $2).

THE 9% SERVICE FEE IS A HOAX.
However, the fee is based on the so called “original price” of $230- not the sale price of $138. Let’s do the math, shall we? 9% of $230 = $20.70, which actually 15% of $138.00. Once again, the service fee is 15%.

$20.70 for some $2 sunglasses is not bad. If 5,000 people fall for it, RedStar makes over 100k. But you have to really feel bad for the few poor American’s who stumble upon RedStar’s website and says “yea, I think I’ve heard of them” and pays $130 for some $2 glasses.
