Some people say that you get what you pay for, but I say that the best things in life are for free! That’s the one thing that I love most about the Internet. It’s one big competitive marketplace for everything. Even things like anti-virus software that used to cost big bucks in addition to annual subscription fees can now be had for free!

How Do You Know It Is Safe?

Now, I don’t expect you to jump on the free anti-virus, security suite, anti-spyware bandwagon without any evidence. AV-Comparatives is an Austrian Non-Profit-Organization that provides independent anti-virus software testing. Thanks Australia! Avira and Avast anti-virus ranked right up there with McAfee and Symantec when comparing detection rates, speed, and everything else! You can check AV-Comparatives website for their full report.

Comodo has Great Ratings

Another option for an entire free internet security suite (includes anit-virus, anti-malware, and firewall) that was not rated by AV-comparatives is theComodo Internet Security Suite which has received 5 cows from Tucows.com and a five star rating from Cnet.

It’s Free for Business Too

Comodo is also free to use for both business and personal use whereas most of the other free anti-virus programs are only free for personal use. The only head-to-head test that I could find on Comodo was done in 2008 at SSUpdater.com where Comodo held it’s own vs 29 other anti-virus programs!

Although, I am not a spy-ware expert… I can read a comparison chart and I sure know a deal when I see one. Based on the information from Av-Comparatives and SSUpdater you probably don’t have to shell out all that money and pay subscription fees for an anti-virus. The free ones seem to be just as good or better so check them out and save some money!
